Four Tips to Put Out a Kitchen Fire

There are plenty of cases where electrical devices and home appliances suddenly burst into flames when used, and they are not to be underestimated since a smartphone has the potential to spark kitchen fires and explosions due to the electricity crackling when your phone short circuits can ignite the emitted gas and cause a big explosion in your kitchen. Every household should have water fire extinguishers to douse out kitchen fires quickly in preparation for a scenario like this. Here are several tips to put out a kitchen fire:

Close the Door 

If the source of the fire is from a microwave or oven, anything that produces heat and can be sealed, don’t the door or lid hang loose and just slam it shut to contain and prevent the fire from spreading. Remember to turn off the appliances quickly and shut the door airtight to keep the fire contained and from growing bigger due to combining with oxygen in the air. In the end, the lack of oxygen will suffocate the flame, and the danger will be over at the cost of an appliance.

Remember that your life is worth more than your belongings because it has intrinsic value and cannot be replaced. It’s better not to be a hero and let the professionals who spend their entire time and energy training and dealing with real-life fire emergencies and outbreaks do their job in extinguishing the blaze. Should you feel helpless or afraid to put out the fire yourself, the first thing you should do is call a fire department, and as soon as their phone starts ringing, they will be in front of your doors at a maximum of 30 minutes.

Grab the Fire Extinguisher

Knowing which type of fire can help you successfully extinguish the blaze, and there are many types of fire extinguishers to put out the many types of fires. For example, you should not use a water fire extinguisher to put out a grease fire since it is scientifically proven that water prevents grease, and it will only exacerbate the situation by spreading the blaze to the nearby area. Instead, use B or K class fire extinguishers to douse the flames effectively.

Use a Wet Towel or Cloth

Sometimes the practical approach is the best way, and it doesn’t have to involve an expensive set of fire extinguishers; a wet towel or cloth can also be sufficient in dousing the blaze of a kitchen fire. Smother the source of the fire with a wet towel or cloth and never aim or swing at the flames because it will evaporate the moisture and liquid on the towel or cloth quickly. Do it quickly, like ripping a band-aid, and you’ll be golden!
